Tilghman’s “Thomas Clyde” Wins 47th Annual Skipjack Race

The Thomas Clyde” of Tilghman Island, pulled ahead of the “City of Crisfield” late in the race to win the 47th Annual Skipjack Race from Deale Island.

Captain Lawrence M. Murphy, with one of the largest Skipjacks on the seven mile Tangier Sound course, defeated seven time winner Arthur Daniels who had held the lead briefly in the race on Monday. Captain Murphy with many years of participating enjoys his first victory.

“I feel very good. I knew I could do it,” he said as he docked his boat — one of eight in the race. “When I first got up this morning, I was mad but I went out there and it breezed up. It was really good sailing weather.”

The Race which is organized and sponsored by the Deale Island-Chance Lions Club, which had thousands in attendence and raised more than 15,000 to benifit the community.
