Marylanders to see the Moons Total Lunar Eclipse on Saturday

As the full March “Sap Moon” or “Crow Moon” rises over the eastern horizon about 6 p.m,it will be in full eclipse as it passes behind the Earth’s shadow in the first total lunar eclipse in three years.

For observers in Maryland, the rising full moon will appear dimmer than usual as it climbs into the eastern sky. It may have an eerie, coppery color – a hue cast upon it by sunlight bent and filtered through Earth’s atmosphere. The color can vary depending on how much volcanic dust and pollution is in the atmosphere.

A chart to calculate the time offset from UTC puts the eclipse starting at 3:18pm EST in North America. The moon will be totally eclipsed 21 minutes prior to sunset in that time zone. The moonrise will occur during the period it is eclipsed, at 6:01pm. Viewers will be able to see the moon re-emerge from the Earth’s shadow, weather permitting.
